Organization Setup¶
Organizations are the top-level container for everything you manage in GTIN1: brands, products, team members, and traceability data. Every brand and trade item belongs to exactly one organization.
Creating an Organization¶
First-time users
If you do not have any organizations yet, GTIN1 redirects you to a setup wizard that creates your organization, brand, and first trade item in one step. The instructions below describe the classic organization creation flow.
- After signing in, navigate to the organization switcher at gtin1.com/organization/.
- Click Create organization.
- Enter your organization name (for example, your company name).
- Click Create organization.
You are automatically assigned as the Owner of the new organization. After creation, you will be directed to the onboarding flow where you can select your industry vertical. This helps GTIN1 populate sample data tailored to your sector.
Tip
If you want to skip the onboarding and set things up manually, you can select Skip during the onboarding flow.
Organization Dashboard¶
Once created, your organization dashboard shows key metrics at a glance:
| Metric | Description |
|---|---|
| Trade items | Total number of GTINs registered under this organization |
| Brands | Number of brands you manage |
| Members | Number of team members with access |
| Recently updated | The 5 most recently modified trade items |
From the dashboard sidebar, you can access all organization features including trade items, brands, team management, billing, and compliance tools.
Organization Settings¶
Click Settings from the sidebar (or navigate to the edit page) to update your organization's details. Administrators and Owners can modify:
- Organization name
- Billing email and address - used for subscription invoices
- Primary contact - name, email, and phone number for the main point of contact
- LinkedIn page URL - your company's LinkedIn page
The Organization Switcher¶
If you belong to multiple organizations, the switcher at gtin1.com/organization/ lets you move between them. It lists every organization where you have a membership, ordered alphabetically.
Click an organization name to enter its dashboard and manage its resources.
Roles and Permissions¶
GTIN1 uses role-based access control to manage what each team member can do within an organization. Every membership has exactly one role.
Role Hierarchy¶
| Role | View data | Create & edit content | Manage settings | Manage team & billing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Viewer | Yes | No | No | No |
| Contributor | Yes | Yes | No | No |
| Administrator | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |
| Owner | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Each role includes all the capabilities of the roles below it. Specifically:
- Viewer - Can view all organization data including trade items, brands, and analytics. Cannot create or modify anything.
- Contributor - Everything a Viewer can do, plus creating and editing trade items, brands, lots, serials, and other product data.
- Administrator - Everything a Contributor can do, plus editing organization settings such as name, contact information, and billing details.
- Owner - Full access, including team management (inviting and removing members, changing roles), deleting the organization, and managing billing subscriptions. Every organization must have at least one Owner.
At least one Owner is required
GTIN1 prevents you from demoting or removing the last Owner. Before changing an Owner's role, promote another member to Owner first.
Inviting Team Members¶
Owners can invite new members to the organization:
- Go to your organization dashboard and click Team in the sidebar.
- Click Invite Member.
- Enter the person's email address.
- Select the role to assign (Viewer, Contributor, Administrator, or Owner).
- Click Send Invite.
If the email matches an existing GTIN1 account, the user is added immediately and can access the organization on their next sign-in. If no account exists, one is created automatically.
Managing Members¶
From the Team page, Owners can:
- Change a member's role - click the edit button next to a member, select a new role, and save.
- Remove a member - click the remove button and confirm. This revokes their access to the organization. Their personal GTIN1 account is not affected.
FSMA 204 Traceability¶
Organizations that handle food products covered by the FDA's Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Section 204 can enable enhanced traceability features.
When FSMA 204 is enabled for your organization, you gain access to:
- Traceability locations - register growing, receiving, shipping, and transformation locations with GLN identifiers
- Critical Tracking Events (CTEs) - record growing, receiving, transforming, creating, and shipping events against lot-tracked products
- Food Traceability List (FTL) categories - designate trade items under FDA food categories such as Leafy Greens, Fresh Herbs, Shell Eggs, and more
- Enhanced lot data - capture harvest dates and growing location details on each lot
- Traceability exports - generate compliance reports at the organization or lot level
Note
FSMA 204 features are only visible when the flag is enabled for your organization. Contact your account administrator or GTIN1 support to enable it.
Next Steps¶
With your organization in place and your team invited, you are ready to register your first brand and product.
