2D Barcodes¶
QR codes and Data Matrix -- the next generation of product identification for retail.
What are 2D Barcodes?¶
2D (two-dimensional) barcodes store data in both horizontal and vertical patterns, allowing them to hold significantly more information than traditional 1D barcodes like UPC or EAN.
The two most common types used in retail and supply chain are QR Codes and GS1 Data Matrix.
1D vs 2D: The Difference¶
- Holds only a product identifier (GTIN)
- No batch, expiry, or serial data
- Cannot link to digital content
- Must be scanned in correct orientation
- 50+ year old technology
- Holds GTIN plus batch, expiry, serial
- Can encode a web URL (Digital Link)
- Connects to digital experiences
- Omnidirectional scanning
- Error correction built-in
Types of 2D Codes¶
QR Code¶
Best for consumer-facing applications. Easily scanned by smartphones. Ideal for packaging that consumers will interact with.
GS1 Data Matrix¶
Compact and robust. Preferred for small items, healthcare, and industrial applications. Can be printed very small.
Why We Focus on QR Codes¶
Consumer Device Compatibility
While both QR codes and Data Matrix are valid 2D barcode formats, most consumer smartphones cannot natively scan Data Matrix codes. QR codes, on the other hand, are universally supported by smartphone cameras -- no special app required.
GTIN1 supports both QR codes and GS1 DataMatrix generation, but our consumer-facing features focus primarily on QR codes because they are universally supported by smartphone cameras -- no special app required.
GS1 DataMatrix remains fully supported for B2B applications like healthcare, logistics, and industrial settings where specialized scanners are standard and compact print size is critical. For consumer engagement, QR codes are the clear choice.
Why Retail is Moving to 2D¶
By 2027, major retailers worldwide will accept 2D codes at point-of-sale. This transition, known as Sunrise 2027, is driven by:
- Traceability -- Track products by batch and serial for recalls and compliance
- Consumer Engagement -- Connect shoppers to product information, promotions, and support
- Regulatory Requirements -- Meet FSMA 204 and Digital Product Passport mandates
- Efficiency -- One code serves retail, logistics, and consumer needs
