Sunrise 2027¶
The global initiative to enable 2D barcodes at retail point-of-sale by 2027.
What is Sunrise 2027?¶
Sunrise 2027 is a global initiative led by GS1 -- the organization that created the barcode -- to transition retail point-of-sale systems to accept 2D barcodes (like QR codes and Data Matrix) alongside traditional 1D barcodes.
By the end of 2027, major retailers worldwide are expected to have upgraded their checkout systems to scan these new codes, enabling a new era of connected products and consumer experiences.
Why is This Happening?¶
The traditional UPC barcode, introduced in 1974, has served retail well for 50 years. But it has limitations:
- It can only hold a product identifier -- no batch, expiry, or serial data
- It can't connect consumers to digital content
- It doesn't meet modern traceability and regulatory requirements
- It requires separate codes for different purposes (retail, logistics, consumer)
2D codes solve all of these problems while remaining backward-compatible with existing systems.
Timeline¶
2020-2024: Preparation¶
Retailers and brands begin testing 2D code scanning. Early adopters implement GS1 Digital Link.
2025-2026: Transition¶
Major retailers upgrade POS systems. Brands begin adding 2D codes to packaging.
2027: Sunrise¶
Retailers globally accept 2D codes at checkout. The new standard becomes the norm.
